Dr Nisha Shah is a medical member of the First-tier Tribunal Health, Education and Social Care Chamber (Mental Health).
“As a consultant of some years’ experience I have long been strongly invested in the provision of high quality tribunals for my detained patients. My interest in legal aspects of our work was also fostered by my intercalated philosophy degree and I felt sure that sitting on the other side of the table would be interesting.
“I applied at a time when I was looking for stimulating psychiatric work which was flexible enough to conduct on a part-time basis. I was also curious to visit a range of mental health units in which I had not worked myself, and meet a wide variety of detained patients and clinicians.
“Following appointment, I very much enjoyed the induction training which enabled me to hit the ground running. I have also been supported by a mentor who is available to me for all sorts of queries.
“I am delighted to be able to participate in this work. Each case is different and working as part of a team with judges and lay members enables different perspectives to be taken. I love that my opinion is valued and that my medical expertise is seen to be an essential part of the process. I hope to continue working for the Mental Health Tribunal for many years!”
