JAC publishes latest diversity update

17 January 2020

The JAC has today published the latest diversity update. The update details the ongoing work to attract and better prepare potential candidates from under-represented groups for judicial appointments and ensure selection processes are fair and non-discriminatory. Diversity updates are published every 6 months.

Recent highlights include:

  • equal merit provisions extended to the shortlisting stages of selection exercises
  • the extension of name-blind shortlisting
  • almost 200 lawyers from underrepresented groups allocated places on the pre-application judicial education (PAJE) programme

Working to support a world class judiciary that reflects the society it serves is at the heart of what we do at the JAC, and we are committed to continual review and improvement of our selection tools and processes.

You can read the JAC’s previous diversity update here. A new statistical report: “Diversity of the judiciary 2020: legal professions, new appointments and current post-holders” – showing diversity at different stages of the judicial appointment process and of judges in the courts and tribunals, incorporating information from the legal professions where available – is due later this year.
