New Chief Executive for Judicial Appointments Commission

19 June 2023

The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) has appointed Alex McMurtrie as Chief Executive. Alex takes up the post following the departure of Richard Jarvis from the JAC on 16 June 2023.

Alex’s appointment follows an open competition and selection by a panel chaired by JAC Chair Helen Pitcher OBE, with the approval of the Lord Chancellor.

A career civil servant, since November 2021 Alex has held the JAC Deputy Chief Executive role. Prior to joining the JAC as Head of Selection Policy in 2017, Alex was the Head of Honours Operations at the Cabinet Office delivering the Cabinet Secretary’s proposals for the twice-yearly honours lists to the Prime Minister and Her Majesty The Queen.

Helen Pitcher OBE said “I am delighted that Alex has been appointed as Chief Executive. Alex brings extensive experience from his JAC and wider civil service career and I very much look forward to working with him in his new role. I would like to thank the outgoing Chief Executive Richard Jarvis for his excellent leadership of the JAC since 2017.”
