Judicial Skills and Abilities: revised Framework published by Judicial Office

The Judicial Office has today published a revised Judicial Skills and Abilities Framework, following a review led by Lady Justice Falk supported by a steering group which included JAC Commissioners, Lord Justice Mark Warby and Professor Chris Bones.
A statement made by the Lady Chief Justice can be found on the Judicial Office website.
The framework sets out what is expected of those in judicial roles. The new Framework covers three areas: Legal and Judicial Skills, Communication Skills and Personal Qualities, and Effective Working. There is a further section that relates to leadership roles. The Commission Board has agreed to adopt the Framework in selection exercises launching from the autumn. It will be used to support the JAC’s recruitment processes, as well as judicial training, development and appraisal.
The JAC will be considering and implementing changes to our processes to ensure alignment with the new framework, with further updates expected in the spring. These will be phased in during 2025.
The recruitment information for each selection exercise will clearly set out how the updated Framework will be applied.
