The JAC wants to make sure that candidates are treated fairly and selected in a consistent way that is free from bias.
To help make the selection process fair, we offer eligible candidates from under-represented groups targeted support and we work hard to maintain standards throughout.
Reasonable adjustments
We want to make sure that candidates with disabilities and those with long-term health conditions can participate fully in all stages of selection through our reasonable adjustments approach.
Asking for reasonable adjustments
When you fill in your application form, you will be asked if you need a reasonable adjustment for any stage of the JAC selection process. There’s a free text box where you can provide as much detail as possible.
If you need any support or adjustment with the online application form then just email or phone the team running your exercise. Their details are on the vacancy information page.
You can contact the exercise team directly at any stage of selection to ask for a reasonable adjustment, but they may not be able to meet a request at very short notice.
Examples of reasonable adjustments
The kind of reasonable adjustments that you could ask for throughout the selection process could include:
- extra time to complete online tests and activities
- providing materials in a larger font size, in Braille, on coloured paper or in different colour contrasts
- having a car parking space
- arranging a preparatory visit to the venue to check layout, test acoustics and check hearing loops
- ensuring that all relevant areas of the venue are accessible for wheelchair users or to assistance dogs
- making arrangements for a sign language interpreter or a candidate’s own interpreter or palantypist to attend
This is not a complete list – you can highlight any individual requests when you apply.
After making a request
Once you have requested any reasonable adjustments, the selection exercise team will:
- review the information you provided – they may contact you to discuss your needs in more detail
- contact you directly to outline the proposed reasonable adjustment – you can review the proposal and confirm your agreement or continue the discussion
- confirm the adjustment in writing before the selection activity
Any problems
If you are not happy with how your reasonable adjustment has been handled you should contact the selection exercise team as soon as possible.
If you are still unhappy, contact us to make a complaint.
Reasonable adjustments for successful candidates
JAC does not share information about any candidate’s reasonable adjustments with HM Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS) or the Judicial Office.
We are not involved in any discussions about this topic after the selection process. If you are offered a role, you:
- must contact Judicial Office promptly to let them know of any reasonable adjustment requests you want to be considered
- should contact HMCTS or the Chamber’s President’s office to ask for any reasonable adjustments – HMCTS will share information about reasonable adjustments with you
