Tribunal Judge June Victoria Meadowcroft, Fee-Paid Judge of the First-tier Tribunal, Health, Education and Social Care Chamber (HESC)

“I am very much enjoying this important role which provides a great deal of personal satisfaction.“
Background
I was the first in my family to attend university, gaining a First Class Degree. I also qualified as a Registered General Nurse and Registered Midwife. In 1995, I was both called to the bar and featured in Cosmopolitan magazine! I then practiced as a self-employed barrister before entering academia.
The application
I was appointed to the First-tier Tribunal in 2024, after several unsuccessful attempts. I only applied one more time because of the enormous support which I received from friends and members of the judiciary. I thank you – you know who you are.
The role
I am very much enjoying this important role which provides a great deal of personal satisfaction. I work alongside an amazing team of Specialist Members and salaried and fee-paid judges.
To those looking to apply for judicial office, I have a few pieces of advice. Firstly, make sure you do your research. You can do this by reading the Equal Treatment Bench Book, Guide to Judicial Conduct, and the Code of Practice, as these are invaluable for applications and future duties. There are also events you can attend to give you information about the role you are applying for and the application process, and you can volunteer as a candidate in JAC mock assessments to gain experience of the process.
The application process requires determination, effort, diligence, endurance, commitment and the ability to embrace setbacks as learning opportunities. When you are appointed, you will be ready, and grateful for the experience you have gained along the way.
Wishing you all the best, June.
