Types of roles

Senior judicial roles

When asked by the Lord Chancellor, the JAC takes part in the selection of senior judicial roles. You can read about some of these roles on the judiciary website

Selecting people for senior judicial roles

The selection process for these senior roles is slightly different to other roles.

Senior selection panels

The most suitable candidate is chosen by a selection panel. Each panel is made up of 5 members, including lay people, and is chaired by the Lady Chief Justice or by a person they nominate. The person in the role currently is not allowed to sit on the panel to choose their successor.

Selection process

Most steps of the application process are similar to other roles in that applicants need to:

  • send in an application letter, a submission of judgment and written work examples
  • undergo and submit two independent assessments

However, non-statutory consultation also takes place with comments requested from the senior judiciary, relevant professional bodies and civil servants.
