I worked as a commercial property solicitor in the City pretty much throughout my career, becoming head of global real estate. I had a great time, but after 30 years I was ready for a different culture and new experiences.

I am a solicitor, specialising in crime. I qualified in 2009 after converting to law – my degree is in computer science. I practiced in criminal defence before moving to the Criminal Cases Review Commission as head of legal.

I had completed my law degree and Legal Practice Course and was searching for a training contract in order to qualify as a solicitor when I spotted an advert for a trainee solicitor post within local government.

I originate from Hertfordshire and attended state schools there. I was fortunate enough to have some truly inspiring teachers and went on to read English at Wadham College, Oxford.

I qualified as a chartered surveyor in 1985, becoming a Fellow in January 2000. I have a varied professional career ranging from a trainee general practice surveyor in Mid Wales to being appointed as a staff surveyor for Nationwide Building Society in Shropshire.

My own background is rooted in social housing. I was born and raised in a multicultural, working-class, urban environment, with the additional life experience of having been homeless myself.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and spent the majority of my career in private practice. 

I am a qualified social worker and my background is as an Expert Witness and former CEO of a foster care company. I still practise as a social worker, and the majority of my other work is adjudicating on fitness to practise hearings for six health and social work regulators in the UK.

I had never thought of becoming a judge, as it seemed to be something that barristers in independent practice did, and I was an in-house employed barrister and had no judicial experience...

I am a solicitor by profession. I qualified in 2009 and specialise in private family matters such as divorce/separation, financial matters on divorce/separation, private law children matters etc.
