If you are invited to an online selection day, you’ll receive an email with:
- advance details of any specific requirements or information
- a Microsoft Teams meeting link – this will arrive either a week or 30 minutes before the selection day is due to start as outlined in the invitation email
What happens on an online selection day
After clicking the Microsoft Teams link, you will be admitted to the online meeting by a JAC coordinator. They will be on hand to help you with any technical issues and will guide you through the following stages.
Registration
Your coordinator will check your ID, run through timings and email you any relevant documentation such as a candidate brief and preparation material. They will also send you a link for the interview later in the day.
Preparation
The coordinator will confirm how long you have to prepare before your interview and ensure that you can access the documents emailed to you. You will need to keep your web cam and microphone on while the coordinator times your preparation session and lets you know when it has finished.
You should make sure:
- you know how to check your junk folder in case material is diverted there
- if you are joining from work, your IT department does not block emails from @judicialappointments.gov.uk
Comfort break
If you need a comfort break, just ask your coordinator who will confirm how long you can have and when you are due to join the interview.
Interview
Your coordinator will share a second Microsoft Teams link with you for the interview. They will explain when to click on this link to start your interview.
Do not click the link until prompted.

Setting up
To take part in an online selection day, you will need:
- a laptop or desktop with a web cam – we don’t recommend using other devices for the day although you can use mobile phones or tablets for viewing documents and making notes. It’s also important to have your mobile phone handy in case you need technical help
- a stable internet connection with speeds over 8Mbps – if your connection is slower or unstable, let your JAC coordinator know. Test your broadband connection speed
- Microsoft Teams application on your laptop or desktop – we will use this software for your selection day and recommend you download it to the device you are using beforehand. If there are technical issues, we may send you a link to a different online meeting provider such as Zoom
- a quiet environment and appropriate background – to give yourself the best chance of success, make sure that you will not be disturbed by other people in your home or office. Learn how to change your background
How to access your meeting on Microsoft Teams
Before you start
Download Microsoft Teams to your device.
We strongly recommend downloading the app but if you would rather join the selection day without doing this, you can click the ‘Join on the web’ option. You will then need to enter the meeting ID and passcode contained in your invite, ensuring you choose ‘gallery view’ so you can see multiple people on screen.
Step 1 – accepting your invite
Select ‘Accept’ or ‘Yes’ to add the meeting invite to your calendar and confirm your attendance with the selection exercise team.
Step 2 – joining the selection day
When it is time to join the selection day, go to your meeting invite and use the ‘Click here to join the meeting’ link to open Microsoft Teams. Make sure you have your camera and microphone turned on and then click ‘Join now’.
If you have not downloaded Microsoft Teams and are joining through your web browser, you will wait in a virtual lobby until your coordinator admits you to the meeting.
